How does it work?
Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. They mimic the GLP-1 hormone that is released in the gut as a response to eating.
GLP-1 send signals to the brain to regulate appetite and food intake. In certain amounts, they may suppress appetite, manage blood sugar, control blood sugar spikes, and reduce cravings. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it may help patients lose weight.
What are my options?
Sublingual
At Medicenter Pharmacy our pharmacist compounds semaglutide as troches, these are medicated lozenges that are administered sublingually (under the tongue) or placed in the mouth between the gum and cheek. Our team takes an available FDA-approved form of semaglutide and changes the dosage form or strength to be customized to the final product for the patient.
Injectable
We have recently partnered with a 503B pharmacy to provide a compounded injectable semaglutide option to our patients. A 503B pharmacy is a pharmacy that is registered with the FDA as a compounding outsourcing facility; they operate on a large scale to make the compounds available to other pharmacies. Though the compound is not FDA approved, the facility that produces it is an FDA approved drug manufacturer and is inspected regularly. Each batch we receive comes with a Certificate of Analysis showing the chemical composition.
